About this product

The A4CF1 is the four-speed automatic Hyundai and Kia hung behind their small four-cylinder front-drive cars, with the A4CF2 being the same architecture built for the larger 1.8L and 2.0L engines. The valve body is the part of that transmission that fails first. Solenoid windings open up, the pressure control circuit loses regulation, and the aluminum bores wear oval where the shift valves stroke. What the driver feels is a bang into second, a flare between gears under light throttle, a long delay before the car pulls after being put in drive, or the transmission dropping into limp and holding third gear with a shift solenoid or gear ratio code stored.

This is a remanufactured complete valve body carrying part number A4CF1 / A4CF2, sold as an assembly rather than a bare casting. It fits the Hyundai Elantra, Elantra Touring and Solaris and the Kia Spectra. Before you order, pull your pan and read the number cast into your existing valve body — Hyundai revised this unit more than once across the production run, and the casting number on the part you take off is the only reliable way to confirm the match.

On the bench it is a straightforward swap. Drop the pan, pull the filter, unplug the solenoid harness at the case connector, and back the valve body bolts out in a spiral from the outside in so the separator plate does not warp. Note bolt lengths as they come out, because they are not all the same and a long bolt in a short hole will crack the casting. Transfer the case connector and any manual valve link, set the new body on a fresh gasket, and torque the bolts down in the reverse of the removal pattern. Fit a new filter and pan gasket while you are in there, then refill and check level at operating temperature — these units are sensitive to being underfilled and will read as a slipping unit if the level is low.

Reman units ship dry. Prime the new body by cycling the shifter through every position with the engine running and the fluid at temperature before you road test, and clear stored codes so the adaptive shift tables relearn from a clean slate.
