Most sub-hundred-dollar code readers only talk to the engine module, which is useless when you are chasing a transmission problem. The MK808S is a full-system tablet: it reads and clears codes out of the transmission control module, ABS, SRS, body and chassis modules, not just the powertrain. On a slipping or hard-shifting automatic, that means you can pull the real TCM codes, watch live line pressure, gear commanded versus attained, input and output shaft speed, and fluid temperature as graphs while you drive, instead of guessing from a check-engine light.

The part that earns its keep on the bench is bidirectional control. The MK808S runs over 3,000 active tests, so you can command shift solenoids, the TCC solenoid, cooling fans and other actuators on and off to isolate a bad solenoid from a wiring or valve-body problem before you tear anything down. It also handles 28-plus service functions, including oil reset, ABS bleed, steering angle calibration and battery registration, which are the resets a lot of transmission and brake jobs need afterward. It supports FCA SGW gateway access, so it will still get into late Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles.

Hardware is a Rockchip RK3566 quad-core with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage on Android 11, driving a 7-inch 1024x600 touchscreen, so it boots and scans noticeably faster than the older MK808 and MX808. Coverage runs 200-plus brands on 1996-and-newer OBDII vehicles, domestic, Asian and European. One honest note: the first year of software updates is included, and after that Autel charges an annual fee to keep adding newer model coverage. The tool keeps working without it; you just stop getting new-vehicle updates. For a shop or a serious DIYer who works on their own transmissions, this is the tier where a scanner actually pays for itself.
