Reads and clears transmission, ABS, SRS and engine codes on VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT, plus oil, EPB and throttle adaption resets.
This is ANCEL's VD500, a handheld code reader built specifically for Volkswagen Group cars rather than a generic engine-light tool. Plug it into the 16-pin OBD2 connector under the dash on a VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT and the V/A Diagnostics menu opens up modules a basic reader cannot see: transmission, ABS, SRS, ESP, TPMS and steering angle, in addition to the engine. That is the difference that matters when a Jetta or a Passat comes in with a hard shift and no check engine light, because the fault is sitting in the transmission controller and a generic P-code reader will show you nothing at all.
On the bench it does three jobs. It reads and clears stored transmission and ABS codes so you can confirm the complaint before the pan comes off, and confirm the memory is clear after the repair. It runs the service resets a transmission or brake job leaves behind: oil service reset, electronic parking brake retract and reset for pad replacement, and throttle position adaption, which is the one people miss after cleaning a throttle body or replacing a battery and then chase a rough idle and a lazy shift for a week. And it does the standard OBD2 work on any 1996-and-later compliant vehicle, VAG or not, reading and clearing P and U codes, turning off the check engine light and pulling the VIN.
Coverage on the VAG side spans VW CC, EOS, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Passat, Phaeton, Polo, Rabbit, Sharan, Tiguan, Touran and Touareg; Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q3, Q5, Q7, R8, TT and the S and RS variants; Skoda Octavia, Rapid, Yeti, Kodiaq, Fabia and Superb; and SEAT Leon, Ateca, Ibiza, Altea and Alhambra. Not every function is available on every chassis and year, and on non-VAG vehicles you get basic engine diagnostics only, with no ABS, SRS, TPMS or service resets.
Know its limits before you buy it. The VD500 does not do bidirectional actuator control, module programming or coding, full-system one-click auto scan, or battery registration. It powers off the OBD2 port with no batteries or charging to deal with. English and German ship on the unit; Spanish, French and Italian download from ANCEL's site, and software updates run through a Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11 PC. There is no subscription and no per-function unlock fee.
