AW4 A340 Shift & TCC Lockup Solenoid Kit w/ Filter

This is the solenoid service kit for the Aisin-Warner AW4 four-speed automatic used behind the 4.0L in the Jeep Cherokee XJ, Comanche MJ and Grand Wagoneer from 1987 through 2001, and for the closely related Toyota A340/A340E/A340F used in the 4Runner, Pickup, T100, Tacoma, Supra, Cressida and Previa, plus the Lexus SC300. It bundles the torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup solenoid, both electronic shift solenoids, a new transmission filter and the pan gasket, so the common electrical failures on these transmissions can be sorted in one pan-down job.

The AW4 shifts and locks the converter by pulsing these solenoids off the TCU. When a shift solenoid weakens or an internal winding opens up, the classic symptoms show up: the trans hangs in a gear, will not upshift in drive but shifts fine when you move the lever by hand, slams or delays a shift, sticks in third, or drops the torque converter lockup so highway rpm stays high and the fluid runs hot. On XJ Cherokees a failed shift solenoid is one of the most frequent causes of a no-upshift complaint that a new TCU does not fix.

Replacement is a pan-off job on the bench of the vehicle: drop the pan, unbolt the old solenoids and filter, transfer the new parts over with the supplied gasket, and refill with the correct ATF. No case teardown is required. Interchanges the OE numbers 85420-22080, 35250-50030, 85420-30110, 85420-12020, 89956 and 97420K. Verify your solenoid connector and transmission model before ordering, as the AW4 and A340 families share the same solenoid hardware but span many chassis.
