CTA 6500 Automatic Transmission Clutch Spring Compressor

The CTA 6500 is a bench clutch spring compressor built for one of the more awkward jobs in an automatic rebuild: removing and reinstalling the snap ring that holds the reverse or low-reverse piston return spring. Its reach lets you get to the rear-most spring assembly without pulling the center shaft and clutch pack back out of the case, so you are not fighting the whole stackup just to change a seal or a return spring.

It fits a wide range of units. Techs commonly run it on the GM 4L60E family (700R4, 4L60, 4L65E, 4L70E) where the rear low-reverse spring cage sits deep, and the same tool has been used on Ford automatics and imports like the Nissan RE5R05A. The outer sprung ears hook into a clip groove on the drum, you adjust the frame to center on the retainer, then the hand knob winds the pressure down onto the spring so the snap ring drops free. Reverse the process to seat a new ring.

Construction is heavy steel so it holds up to repeated shop use. Note the one real-world tip from the bench: on the deepest piston the lower jaw can want to walk out of the groove under load, so keep it seated and take up pressure slowly.
