Dana 60 Differential Carrier Bearing Kit 706047XR

This is the Motive Gear 706047XR carrier bearing kit, built with Koyo tapered roller bearings. It covers the differential carrier (side) bearings on Dana 60 standard rotation, Dana 60 reverse rotation, Dana 61, Dana 70 and Dana 70U axles, front or rear. It replaces the earlier 706047X kit.

When to use it: carrier bearings are the ones that hold the whole differential case in the housing and set ring gear backlash and preload. When they wear, you hear a steady growl or hum that changes with speed but not much with load, and the ring gear starts to walk, which shows up as a backlash reading that won't hold and a gear pattern that moves. Any time you set up a new ring and pinion, or pull the carrier to replace a worn case or locker, put new carrier bearings on. Old bearings pressed back on a carrier rarely hold preload.

On the bench: pull the old bearings with a split-type side bearing puller so you don't damage the carrier journals, keep the original shims in order on each side, and press the new cones on square with a driver that bears on the inner race only. Install the new races with the cones, then set backlash and case spread per Dana spec for your axle, check the gear pattern, and fill with the correct gear oil (and friction modifier if the axle has a clutch-type limited slip).
