MDMA Transmission Rebuild Kit for Honda CR-V 1997-2001

This is a complete clutch-and-seal rebuild kit for the four-speed automatic Honda put in the first-generation CR-V, chassis code RD1, built from 1997 through 2001 behind the 2.0L B20 engine. Honda stamped several codes on this unit depending on year and drivetrain, and this kit is built for the MDMA, MDLA, M4TA and SDMA cases. Check the code on the transmission case before ordering rather than going by model year alone, and have your VIN handy if you need to confirm.

The first-gen CR-V automatic wears out in a predictable order. The clutch packs glaze from heat and towing, second and third gear start to slip or flare on the upshift, engagement into Drive gets slow and harsh, and the fluid comes out dark with clutch material in the screen. Fluid flushes and additives will not bring back a friction pack that is already burnt. Replacing the frictions, steels and every seal in the unit is the repair.

The box contains three parts of the job: the overhaul kit with the gaskets and seals, the friction plates, and the steel plates. On the bench, soak the new frictions in clean ATF for at least 30 minutes, inspect each drum and clutch piston for scoring and heat discoloration, and check clutch pack clearance before the drums go back in the case. Replace the axle seals while the unit is out. Refill with Honda ATF DW-1. Hard parts, bushings, the valve body, the filter and the torque converter are not included, so plan on replacing the filter at the same time.
