2-Leg Transmission Clutch Spring Compressor, Handheld Piston Return Spring Removal and Install Tool

Every clutch pack in an automatic transmission has a piston return spring, or a Belleville spring stack, held under load by a snap ring. To get that ring out you have to compress the spring first, and doing it wrong means a spring under real tension looking for a way out. The bench-mount presses do the job, but they are heavy, they bolt to a station, and they are overkill when you just need to pop one drum apart. This two-leg compressor is the fast, grab-it-off-the-wall version of that tool.

The two galvanized legs straddle the drum and hook under the retaining washer, the center screw bears down on the spring cage, and you turn the knob until the spring gives up enough room to clear the snap ring groove. Pull or seat the ring, back the screw off slowly, and the spring releases in a controlled way instead of launching across the shop. Because it clamps to the drum itself rather than a fixture, you can work a clutch pack on the bench or with the unit still on the stand.

The frame is A3 steel with a rust-proof coating, and the whole tool weighs about 2.8 pounds, so it lives in a drawer and comes out whenever you need it. It is sized for the clutch drums on most American cars and light trucks, the Crown Victoria, Town Car, Ranger, and Focus families among them. For anyone who rebuilds transmissions on a budget, it does the same job as the big presses at a fraction of the price and none of the bulk.
