About this product

The OTC 7024 is an adjustable bench tool for the one job that will launch a snap ring across your shop if you rush it: compressing the return springs behind a rear or reverse clutch piston so the retaining snap ring comes out clean. Two semicircular arms seat against the clutch drum's spring retainer, and a center screw draws them down evenly to hold the springs while you work the ring with your free hand.

It fits most American automatic transmissions and light trucks, including common GM units (TH350, TH400, 700R4, 4L60E), Ford, and Chrysler clutch drums up to the tool's arm span. Because it holds the drum from above rather than pressing straight down, you get real clearance to reach the snap-ring groove, which is where a shop press usually fights you.

On the bench, clamp the tool or the drum in a vise, center the arms over the retainer washer, snug the screw until the springs release tension on the ring, then remove or seat the snap ring and back the screw off in a controlled way. Drop-forged steel construction, roughly 12 x 7 in, about 3 lb. It ships as the compressor unit with an instruction sheet.
