Compresses the low and reverse return spring in the rear of a GM Powerglide case so you can pull the retainer snap ring without the piston spring launching.
The Powerglide runs its low and reverse clutch at the back of the case, and the piston sits under a return spring held down by a snap ring seated in the case groove. To get that ring out you have to hold the spring compressed while you work the pliers, and doing it freehand with a screwdriver means a loaded spring pack looking for a way off the bench. This is the dedicated tool that pins the spring so the ring comes out clean.
Using it is a three-step job. The tool's ends slide into the ridges cast into the case, seating it square over the piston. Turn the center shank down and it pushes the return spring far enough to expose the snap ring groove; drop your snap ring pliers into the half-moon cutout and lift the ring straight out. Back the shank off to release tension, pull the tool and the spring, then a shot of air behind the low reverse piston walks it out of the bore. Reassembly runs the same way in reverse.
This one is cut specifically for the GM Powerglide ALGP rear clutch and is comparable to the OEM T-0150 in fit and function. Note the fitment: it is for the Powerglide, not the 4L60E. If you are rebuilding a 4L60E rear clutch you need the T-0151 instead, which is a different spread. Made from steel for the load it has to hold, it turns a slow, sketchy part of a Powerglide teardown into a couple of minutes.
