TOPDON TC004 Mini Thermal Imaging Camera 240x240

A transmission that is running hot tells you so on the outside long before a code sets, and this is the tool that lets you see it. The TOPDON TC004 Mini is a handheld infrared camera that paints surface temperature across whatever you point it at, so instead of touching a line with the back of your hand you get an actual number on a 240x240 image. It reads from -4 F up to 842 F with the highest, lowest, and center-spot temperatures called out automatically, which covers everything on a driveline from a cold cooler line to a glowing exhaust that is cooking a pan.

The job it does best on the bench and on the lift is checking cooler flow. Bring the unit up to operating temperature, shoot the cooler inlet line and then the return line, and read the delta. A healthy cooler pulls real heat out and you will see a clear temperature drop across it. If both lines read nearly the same, the cooler or the lines are restricted, and you have found that before you drop a rebuilt unit into a truck and burn it down on the customer. The same scan across the pan, the bellhousing, and the converter area will show you a hot spot from a dragging clutch pack or a converter that is not releasing, and on a front-wheel-drive transaxle it will separate a hot transmission from a hot exhaust running two inches away from it.

The imaging side is a 128x128 sensor upscaled to 240x240 with TISR, refreshing at 25 Hz through a 40 by 30 degree field of view, so the picture moves with you instead of smearing as you walk around a vehicle. Accuracy is within 3.6 F or 2 percent. You can set a high or low temperature threshold and it throws an on-screen alert and grabs a photo by itself the moment the target crosses it, which is handy when you are watching a pan temperature climb on a road test or a stall test and cannot look at the screen the whole time. Five color palettes let you switch to whichever one makes the hot spot jump out of the background.

Battery life is rated at 15 hours on a charge, and the whole thing weighs about a pound, so it lives in a toolbox drawer and comes out for the diagnosis instead of sitting on a charger in the office. Outside the transmission bay it does the usual shop work too: finding a shorted circuit in a harness, a seized brake caliper, a plugged radiator core, a bad wheel bearing, or a dead cylinder by exhaust manifold runner temperature.
