The XTOOL D5S is a four-system bidirectional scan tool that talks to the Engine, Transmission, ABS, and SRS controllers, not just the generic OBD2 powertrain module. It runs on a Linux platform behind a 5.45-inch 1440x720 touchscreen, supports CAN FD and FCA AutoAuth, and covers OBD2-equipped cars and 12V light trucks built from 1996 up across 90-plus brands. Software updates are free for life over WiFi, with no annual subscription.
On the transmission side it does the work a basic code reader cannot. It reads and clears TCM trouble codes, streams live transmission data such as fluid temperature, input and output shaft speed, and line pressure in text or up to four graphed PIDs, and runs Gearbox Match (transmission adaptation relearn) so the TCM re-learns shift points after a solenoid swap, valve body change, or fluid service. Clearing the codes that drop a unit into limp mode is a common use, letting you confirm whether a fault is active or historical before you tear into anything.
Beyond the transmission it carries 16 reset services: EPB (electronic parking brake) reset, SAS steering angle calibration, BMS battery registration, throttle body relearn, TPMS reset, ABS bleeding, injector coding, oil service reset, crank sensor (CKP) relearn, and more. The crank relearn alone is what pushes a lot of DIYers past a cheap reader, since a P0315 or P0339 after an engine or starter job will not clear itself on many Hondas, GMs, and Fords without it.
It reads live engine data (RPM, fuel trims, O2 voltage, coolant temp), shows freeze-frame snapshots, has a built-in DTC library so codes come with plain descriptions, and displays real-time battery voltage. Auto VIN and Auto Scan speed up identification on newer vehicles; older 1996-2000 vehicles may need the VIN typed in manually. The box includes the D5S, an OBD2 cable, a USB-C charging cable, and a quick guide. Note that FCA AutoAuth for certain Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram functions requires a free account you register for separately.
