ZF 8HP70 Transmission Master Rebuild Kit 2010-2016

Master overhaul kit for the ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic, the transmission GM never built and everyone else did: BMW X5 and X6, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger and Durango, Chrysler 300, Jaguar XF and XJ, Land Rover Range Rover, and Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte. The 8HP75 is the same case and shares this kit. Ships fast, so a unit on the bench is not waiting a week on parts.

The kit covers the parts you throw away during a teardown: the clutch friction plates, the full gasket and seal set, lip seals, O-rings and the sealing rings that ride the shafts and drums. The 8HP is a five-clutch design with a very tight clearance window, so the frictions and the sealing rings are where the transmission lives or dies. Worn sealing rings on the input and output shafts are what bleed apply pressure and cause the harsh 2-3 and the flare on the 4-5 that these units get known for around 100,000 miles.

On the bench: pull the mechatronic unit first, mark clutch pack stack order as you pull each drum, and dry-fit the new frictions before you soak them. Soak the new plates in clean ZF Lifeguard 8 for at least 30 minutes before assembly or they will glaze on the first apply. Reset clutch clearance to spec with the selective plates in your old stack, not by feel - the 8HP does not tolerate a stack that is even a few thousandths loose. Replace the sealing rings on every shaft you have apart while it is open; they are cheap here and expensive to go back in for.
