If you have ever gone to flush the transmission on a 1996-or-newer GM truck or SUV and stared at that snap-in cooler line at the radiator wondering how you are supposed to get a hose on it, this little fitting is the answer. The factory cooler lines use a quick-connect that snaps into the radiator, and there is no barb to slip a hose over. This 397 adapter threads into that port in place of the line, gives you a clean 3/8 inch barb, and lets you push a length of standard 3/8 inch tubing straight onto it. Now you can run the fluid out into a catch bottle and new fluid back in, and do a real cooler-line flush instead of a partial drain-and-fill.
It is just as handy when you are adding an auxiliary transmission cooler. Instead of cutting into the factory hard lines and hoping your splice holds, you thread this in and tee your cooler off the barb, so the original plumbing stays intact and you can put it back to stock any time. The body is machined from brass and coated for corrosion resistance, so it holds up to hot ATF and road salt without seizing or leaking, and it ships with a 304 stainless steel clamp that spans 0.6 to 1.1 inch to lock the hose down tight.
