Solenoid set with filter for early 1993-1997 Ford AODE and 4R70W units in Crown Vic, F-150, Mustang, Explorer, Thunderbird and E-Series.
This is an electrical service kit for the early Ford 4R70W (and the AODE it grew out of): the solenoids for the 1993-1997 units plus a transmission filter, so the pan only comes off once. The early units use a different solenoid body and connectors than the 1998-up 4R70W, so this kit is for the pre-1998 transmissions only.
Why it fails: a weak EPC solenoid drops line pressure, which causes soft or late shifts, slipping and burnt clutches; a sticking shift solenoid gives missed gears or a start in the wrong gear; a bad TCC solenoid causes shudder at cruise or no converter lockup. Solenoid codes on these trucks and cars usually lead straight back to this group.
On the bench: drop the pan, pull the filter, disconnect the case harness from the solenoid body, and unbolt it from the valve body. Install the new solenoids, reconnect the harness, fit the new filter, and refill with Mercon. Check the solenoid body O-rings are seated before torquing the bolts.
