Replaces the failed NP8 encoder motor on 2003-2007 Chevy Silverado NVG246 transfer cases that throw Service 4WD and dead selector lights.
This is the electric encoder motor that bolts to the rear of the NVG246 (NP246) transfer case and both drives the range fork and reports shaft position back to the transfer case control module. It is the part that fails on GM full-size trucks and SUVs built with RPO code NP8 - the four-button push-button 4WD selector. Typical symptoms are a Service 4WD Now message, all four selector lights going dark or flashing in sequence, the truck refusing to leave the range it is in, and stored codes C0321, C0327 or C0374 for the transfer case motor and encoder circuits.
Fitment is 2003-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500 HD, Suburban 1500 and 2500, Tahoe and Avalanche; 2003-2007 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500 HD, Yukon and Yukon XL; 2003-2007 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; and 2006-2010 Dodge Ram 1500 plus 2007 Ram 2500. It also covers the 2007 Classic body-style GM trucks. It interchanges with GM 19125571, 19125640, 12384980 and 88962314, and Dodge 5170543AA. The RPO code is printed on the sticker in the glovebox - if NP8 is not on that list, this is not the right transfer case.
On the bench and under the truck: drop the transfer case skid plate, mark and pull the front driveshaft, unplug the connector, and remove the three motor bolts. The new motor ships locked in the neutral index position, so the transfer case shaft has to be turned to match before it will seat - put the transmission in neutral with the wheels chocked, rotate the shaft until the keyway points straight down, then slide the motor on and torque the bolts in sequence. After the swap, disconnect both battery cables and touch them together for a few minutes to reset the TCCM, or the module will hold the old codes and the selector will stay dead.
This is a 100 percent new assembly rather than a remanufactured core, with the factory-style connector and a sealed housing to keep road salt and water out of the gear train. Only the motor assembly is in the box - reuse a cleaned original gasket or order a new one, and transfer the alignment bushing from the old unit if yours has one.
