This is the lower pan filter that picks up ATF before the pump. As these trucks pile on miles the fluid loads up with clutch material and fine metal, the filter starts to restrict, and you get flare on the 1-2 shift or a shudder under light throttle. Dropping the pan and swapping the filter and gasket at a fluid service is the cheapest insurance you can put in one of these transmissions.
On the bench: drop the pan, pull the old filter straight down off the pump neck, and lube the new filter's pickup O-ring before you seat it. The pan is a reusable gasket design, twenty pan bolts, so torque them in a crossing pattern to spec and refill through the check port with Toyota WS fluid at the correct temperature. Confirm the O-ring size matches your pump before final assembly - early A760F cores can run a thinner cross-section.
