Ball Joint and U-Joint Press Kit for Class 1-3 Trucks

This is a C-frame press service kit for press-fit driveline and suspension parts: universal joints, press-in ball joints, and truck brake anchor pins. The frame is a one-piece heavy clamp designed not to spring open under load, which is the whole problem with light stamped C-frames - once the frame flexes, the forcing screw goes off center and you start galling the yoke ear instead of moving the cup.

The kit includes three receiver tubes (2-3/4 in ID x 3 in OD, 2-1/4 in ID x 2-1/2 in OD, and 1-3/4 in ID x 2 in OD) plus an installing cup, a receiving cup, and an installing adapter. That range covers Class 1 through Class 3 light and medium truck u-joints - 1310, 1330 and 1350 series cross and bearing sets - along with the press-in ball joints used on 1/2, 3/4 and 1-ton front ends and Dana 44 and Dana 60 knuckles.

On a u-joint the sequence is the same every time: pull the clips, seat the small receiver tube over the cup you are pushing into, put the driver on the opposite cup, and run the screw until the first cup walks out. Flip the yoke, press the cross the other direction, and the second cup follows. On installation you press one cup in until the clip groove clears, drop the cross in, then square up the second cup - never drive a needle-bearing cup home with a hammer, that is how you knock rollers over and end up with a joint that binds at full droop and puts a vibration into the driveshaft and the transmission tailshaft bushing.

The most common reason a shop reaches for this instead of a press is a truck on a lift with the driveshaft still in the vehicle, or a knuckle you do not want to pull. The kit stores in a blow-molded hard case so the receiver tubes stay together instead of scattering across the bench.
