BMW E90 Rear Differential Mount Bushing Tool Kit

The rear differential on a BMW E90 hangs from the rear axle carrier on rubber mount bushings. When those bushings tear or go soft the diff moves under load, and you get a clunk on takeoff, a thump when you get on and off the throttle, and extra driveline slop that people often blame on the transmission or the driveshaft guibo first. Replacing the bushings is the fix, but they are pressed in tight and are hard to get out cleanly without the right cups.

This kit is a set of receiver cups, pressing sleeves, and adapters driven by a threaded push rod (about 8.9 inches long, M12 threads on both ends), so you can pull the old bushing out and pull the new one in with a wrench instead of a hydraulic press. It is also used on the rear lower control arm bushings and rear suspension ball joints on the same axle.

On the bench: drop the rear axle carrier or support the diff, pick the cup that clears the bushing outer shell and the sleeve that sits on the bushing itself, run the push rod through, and tighten the nut to draw the old bushing out. Clean the bore, line up the new bushing with its voids in the factory orientation, and use the installer side of the set to draw it in until it seats flush. Lube the bore with rubber-safe assembly grease, not oil.

Bushing sizes vary between chassis and model years, so measure your old bushing against the cups before you start.
