BMW X5 E70 Transmission Mount Bushing Remover Tool Set

The transmission mount bushing on BMW X-chassis xDrive vehicles is pressed into the arm that bolts to the back of the transfer case. When it tears, you get a clunk on throttle tip-in, a shudder at low speed, and driveline vibration that people usually blame on the driveshaft or the center support bearing. The factory repair calls for dropping the transfer case or the whole rear subframe to get at it. This press set does the job with the vehicle on the lift and the transfer case still bolted in place.

The set works as a puller and installer in one. A forcing screw runs through a bearing-backed nut, with a receiver cup on one side and a driver on the other. You bracket the mount arm, thread the screw through the old bushing, and wind it out into the cup. Flip the cup and driver, line the new bushing up square with the bore, and press it in until it seats flush. Because the screw stays centered in the bore the whole time, the bushing goes in straight instead of cocking and shaving rubber off the outer sleeve, which is what happens when a shop tries this with a hammer and a socket.

Fitment covers X3 E83 2004-2010, X5 E53 2000-2007, X5 E70 2007-2013, and X6 E71 2008-2013, plus the E60, E61, E90, E91, and E92 xDrive cars that use the same mount arm. Manufacturer part number is UT12-016. The set ships in a blow-molded case, 18 x 13 x 5.5 inches, roughly 19 pounds, so the pieces stay together on the bench between jobs.

Plan on removing the heat shield and the two mount arm bolts before you start, and check the arm itself for cracks while you have it exposed. If the old bushing has been walking in the bore, the arm is usually the reason the new one will not last.
