An 18-piece clutch alignment set that centers the clutch disc to the crankshaft pilot bearing before you torque down the pressure plate. It covers both fractional and metric pilot bores: seven SAE pilot adapters with one clutch disc centering adapter and one alignment shaft, plus five metric pilot adapters with two centering adapters and a second alignment shaft. Everything stores in a blow-molded case, 11.88 x 8.25 x 2 inches.
On the bench the sequence is simple. Pick the pilot adapter that fits the pilot bearing or bushing in the end of the crank, slide it onto the alignment shaft, then add the centering adapter that matches the splined hub of your disc. Push the assembly through the disc and into the pilot, hold the disc flat against the flywheel, and bring the pressure plate down in a cross pattern a few foot-pounds at a time. Pull the shaft out once the plate is torqued and the disc stays concentric.
This is the fix for the job that will not go back together: transmission jacked into place, input shaft an eighth of an inch off, and the bellhousing hanging up short of the block because the disc drifted while the pressure plate was tightened. Forcing the trans in on the bolts at that point bends the disc hub and chews the input splines. Aligning first also keeps the release bearing and fork loaded straight, which is where chatter and a stiff pedal come from after a clutch swap. Fitment is broad - most domestic and import cars and light trucks with a manual transmission, OTC part number 4528.
