Replaces a seized 4WD shift motor on 2009-2011 F-150 and 2008-2011 Expedition transfer cases so 4HI and 4LO will engage again.
This is the electric shift motor that sits on the back of the transfer case and physically moves the range fork between 2HI, 4HI and 4LO. When it fails, the dash lights flash and hang, the truck stays stuck in whatever range it was last in, and a scan tool typically stores a transfer case motor circuit or encoder-position code. Dorman 600-928 is a 100 percent new unit, not a remanufactured core, and it uses the factory-style connector and a sealed housing so the wiring plug and internal gear train stay dry under the truck.
Fitment covers Ford Expedition 2008-2011, Ford F-150 2009-2011, Lincoln Navigator 2008-2010, and Lincoln Mark LT 2010-2011. It interchanges with Ford part numbers 8L1Z-7G360-AB and AL3Z-7G360-A. Because it is vehicle-specific, confirm your trim and drivetrain before ordering rather than assuming every 4x4 of that year uses the same motor.
Installation is from underneath. Disconnect the battery, unplug the motor connector, then remove the bolts holding the motor to the transfer case housing. Note the position of the shift shaft before you pull the old motor off, and make sure the new motor's encoder ring lines up with the shaft flats as it seats. Torque the bolts evenly, reconnect, and cycle the range switch through 2HI, 4HI and 4LO to let the module relearn position. Clear codes afterward.
Two things kill these motors. The first is water intrusion at the connector, which corrodes the encoder contacts and gives erratic range readings. The second is trying to shift into 4LO while rolling or with the transmission in gear, which loads the fork and stalls the motor against the shift rail. Fix any cracked connector boot at the same time you replace the motor, and always shift to 4LO stopped with the trans in neutral.
