GEARWRENCH 3887 Ratcheting Tap and Die Set 77-Piece

A 77-piece SAE and metric tap and die set built around ratcheting T-handles instead of the old sliding tap wrench. The handles index in a 5-degree arc with a reversing lever, so you can cut or chase a thread in a valve body, case bore, or bellhousing flange without pulling the tool off the work every quarter turn. That matters on a transmission bench, where half the threads you need to fix are down in a case pocket with a pan rail or a bracket in the way.

The set covers 18 taper taps, 14 plug taps, 2 pipe taps (1/8-27 NPT and 1/8-28 BSPT), and 34 hex dies, spanning 4-40 through 1/2-13 in SAE and 3mm x 0.50 through 12mm x 1.75 in metric. That range covers essentially everything on an automatic transmission: pan bolts, valve body bolts, cooler line ports, pump bolt holes, extension housing bolts, bellhousing-to-block holes, and the 1/8 NPT pressure tap most GM and Ford cases use for a line-pressure gauge.

The dies are hex-bodied rather than round, so they drop into the included hex die adapter and can also be turned with a plain wrench or socket when the ratcheting handle will not fit. The Twist Lock guide keeps the die square to the stud and stops it walking back off the thread, which is the usual reason a hand-cut die chews up a bolt instead of cleaning it. Two thread pitch gauges (SAE and metric) are in the case so you can identify a stripped hole before you pick a tap.

Use it for chasing corroded pan bolt holes before torquing a new gasket, cleaning up cooler line port threads that have been overtightened, cutting a fresh thread in a case repair insert, and dressing bolt threads that came out of an aluminum case with locking compound baked on them. Taps are consumable cutting tools and carry no warranty, so back off and clear chips every turn or two rather than forcing them.
