Winds and crimps Band-It steel axle boot clamps tight with a 5/8-inch wrench, then disengages clean so the band holds without slicing through as you tension it.
This is the tool for installing the steel band-type clamps that hold a CV axle boot to the joint and shaft. It works with all Band-It and Band-It Jr. style bands, the flat stainless strap clamps used on Honda, Toyota, GM, and many other CV boots and rack-and-pinion bellows in place of the ear-type crimp clamps.
On the bench or on the car, you feed the free end of the band through the slot in the tool head, then turn the tool with a 5/8-inch socket or wrench to wind the strap and pull the boot tight against the joint. Once the band is at tension, you bend it over to lock it and back the tool out. The head releases from the band cleanly so you are not fighting to free the tool after the clamp is set.
The reason to have this in the box is that a torn or leaking CV boot throws grit into the joint and turns a cheap boot job into a clicking, worn-out axle. Regular pliers will not properly tension a steel band clamp, and an under-tightened band lets the boot spin and sling grease. This puts real, repeatable clamping force on the band so the boot seals and stays put. Winding the tool a touch above tangent, roughly 30 to 40 degrees, gives the smoothest pull without the edge cutting the strap early. Ships from the USA.
