NP231 Transfer Case Shift Cable Conversion Kit for Jeep TJ

B&M part number 81184 converts the factory rigid rod-and-lever transfer case linkage on the 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ over to a cable-operated shifter. The stock TJ arrangement runs a solid rod from the floor lever down to the shift arm on the NP231 Command-Trac case, and every bushing and pivot in that chain wears. Once it is worn you get a vague throw, a lever that will not fully seat in 4-Hi or 4-Lo, and a case that can pop back out of range under load.

The cable takes the alignment problem out of the linkage. A rod has to stay geometrically true as the drivetrain moves on its mounts; a cable does not care. That matters most on a lifted TJ, where a body lift or sagging motor mounts change the rod geometry and the transfer case lever starts fighting you or stops reaching full engagement. With the cable, the shift arm at the case sees the same clean pull regardless of where the body sits relative to the frame.

Fitment is 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and the 2004-2006 Unlimited (LJ) running the NP231 Command-Trac transfer case. Rubicon models use the NV241OR Rock-Trac case and take B&M 81186 instead, not this kit. Budget bench time for pulling the center console and trim to route the cable from the shifter down to the transfer case shift arm.
