Removes and installs internal snap rings from 3-1/16 to 6-1/4 inches and external rings to 6-1/2 inches, with a ratchet lock that holds the ring open.
Most snap-ring pliers top out around a 3-inch ring. That is fine for a servo cover or a small sun gear retainer, but it leaves you prying at the big clutch-drum and rear-case retaining rings in heavy automatics with a screwdriver. The OTC 4513 is the two-plier set built for those: 16 inches overall with a 12-1/2 inch handle, so you get real leverage and enough reach to work down inside a case that is still bolted to a holding fixture.
The internal plier spreads rings from 3-1/16 to 6-1/4 inches (78 mm to 159 mm). The external plier closes rings from 3-1/2 to 6-1/2 inches (89 mm to 165 mm). Both use a spring ratchet lock, which is the part that matters on the bench: once you have compressed a clutch pack or a piston return spring and spread the ring, the ratchet holds it there so the tips do not walk out of the ring eyes and let the ring snap back at you while you are working it out of the groove.
Tips are 0.12 inch (3 mm) diameter and replaceable, and the blow-molded case ships with extra pairs in straight, 45-degree and 90-degree. Bent tips are what kill a snap-ring plier, so being able to swap a tip instead of replacing the tool is the reason this set stays in a rebuild bay for years. Jaws are heat-treated steel. For rings smaller than 3 inches you still want a standard convertible plier set alongside this one.
