You seat the bushing over the broken fastener and the drill bit runs through it, so the hole starts on center and stays there instead of walking off into the aluminum.

On transmission work that is the whole job. A snapped pan bolt, a bellhousing bolt sheared off flush in the case, a stud broken in the tailhousing - drill off-center in a magnesium or aluminum case and you have turned a bolt job into a thread insert job, or a case replacement. Centered, the extractor bites and the remains back out.

The drill bits are left-hand, which does more work than people expect: turning counterclockwise, the bit itself often grabs a bolt that let go from torque rather than corrosion and spins it out before you ever reach for the extractor.
