OTC 7040 Transmission Case Holding Fixture with Base

The OTC 7040 is the two-piece bench setup for tearing a transmission down: the 7040-1 holding fixture that bolts to the case, and the 34607 base the fixture pivots in. Once the case is strapped to the fixture you can spin it a full 360 degrees, with positive stops every 90, so the pan rail, the bellhousing face and the tail end all come up to you instead of you crawling around a case laid on the bench. Rated to 250 lb of transmission and hardware.

The fixture arms are adjustable, so it is not tied to one case pattern. You pick up whatever bolt holes the case gives you and clamp down. That covers automatic cases, transfer cases, third members and small engines. OTC lists it as similar to J-36842, which is the number you will see called out in GM service procedures for a case-mounted holding fixture, so if a manual tells you to mount the unit in J-36842, this is the tool that does it.

The reason it matters on the bench is repeatability. Endplay checks, air-checking clutch circuits, pulling pump bolts and setting the case on its nose to drop a drum all want the case held rigid at a known angle. A transmission balanced on a couple of blocks of wood shifts the moment you lean on it, and that is how pump faces get scratched and how a drum lands on the floor. Locked in the 7040 at a 90-degree stop, the case stays put and both your hands stay on the parts.
