Pinion Bearing Race Driver Set 2-11/16 to 4-1/8 Inch 11pc

An eleven piece driver set for seating pinion and carrier bearing races in truck and SUV axle housings. The eight drivers cover 2-11/16", 2-27/32", 2-7/8", 3", 3-1/4", 3-1/2", 3-3/4" and 4-1/8", which is the range you run into on half ton and three quarter ton Ford, Dodge and GM pickups, plus most vans and SUVs built on those axles. Each driver is a solid machined disc with a stepped lip that lands on the race face and clears the housing bore, so you are pushing on the race itself and not on the cage or the rollers.

The kit ships with a 16 inch two piece screw together handle. That length is what gets you down to the inner pinion race sitting deep in the carrier housing, where a short drift will not reach square. The handle threads apart for the shallow outer race and threads together for the inner. Knurling on the grip section is there for a reason - once your hands have gear oil on them a smooth handle rolls out of your grip mid swing.

A pneumatic drive adapter is included and swaps in for the handle extension, so you can run the same drivers off an air hammer instead of a dead blow. That is the fast way to walk a stubborn race the last quarter inch without hammering it in cocked. A cocked race is the usual cause of a rebuilt third member that howls on decel - it never seated flat, so the pinion depth shim stack is lying to you.

Use it any time you replace pinion bearings, a ring and pinion, or carrier side bearings, and any time you pull an axle apart for a rear main or output seal on a rear wheel drive truck. It also covers the larger bearing and seal bores on transfer cases and rear extension housings where a standard automotive seal driver set tops out too small.
