Roll pins are the thin-walled, split hollow pins that hold a lot of a transmission together in spots you do not want to fight: the dowel and check-ball pins in a valve body, the roll pin through a shift fork on a manual, the actuator pin on a parking pawl, and the fork pins in a transfer case. Drive one of those with a solid punch and the tip walks off center and mushrooms the pin flat, and now you are drilling. A roll pin punch has a small guide ball on the end of a long, straight shank that seats inside the hollow pin and keeps the punch centered so the pin backs out straight.
