On the bench the job is straightforward: drop the pan, pull the old strainer off the valve body, clean the sealing surfaces, seat the new strainer with a light coat of ATF on its O-ring, then reinstall the pan with the fresh gasket. The strainer is what clogs as friction material and clutch debris accumulate; a plugged strainer starves the pump, drops line pressure and shows up as delayed or slipping shifts, so it is the first thing to change at a fluid service or whenever you have the pan down.
