TF-81SC Transmission Solenoid Kit, 8-Piece AF40-6

This is the full eight-solenoid complement for the Aisin TF-81SC six-speed automatic, also cataloged as the TF-80SC and AF40-6. It is the transverse six-speed used across Ford Mondeo and Fusion, Mazda 6 and CX-9, Volvo S40/S60/S80/XC60/XC70, Saab 9-3 and 9-5, Peugeot 307/407/607, Citroen C4/C5/C6, Fiat Croma and Renault Laguna from roughly 2005 through 2016. Buying the set means the whole solenoid bank comes out and goes back in once, instead of pulling the pan twice when the second one fails a month later.

Solenoid wear on the TF-81SC reads the same way on almost every one of these cars: a hard or banging 1-2 and 2-3 shift, shift flare where the engine runs up between gears, delayed engagement pulling out of Park, torque converter lockup shudder at light throttle around 40-50 mph, and eventually a stored solenoid performance code and a drop into limp with only third gear. The valve body solenoids all live in the same fluid and see the same heat cycles, so once one starts sticking the rest are usually close behind.

The set installs from underneath with the pan and filter off. Drop the pan, pull the filter, unclip the internal harness connectors, unbolt the solenoid retaining brackets and lift the old solenoids straight out of their bores. Check each bore for scoring and clean the magnet and pan before reassembly. Torque the retainers evenly, refit a new filter and pan gasket, then refill and set level at operating temperature per the factory procedure. Clear codes and relearn adaptives afterward - the TCM will otherwise keep applying the pressure correction it learned against the worn solenoids.
