Toyota Corolla 4-Speed Automatic Shifter Cable 33820-02A40

This is a replacement transmission shifter cable for the 2014-2017 Toyota Corolla 1.8L with the 4-speed automatic transmission (ZRE172 chassis). It replaces Toyota part number 33820-02A40 and connects the floor shifter to the range lever on the transmission. It does not fit Corollas with the CVT or the 6-speed manual, which use different cables, so check which transmission your car has and confirm the part number before ordering.

A stretched, binding or broken shifter cable makes the shifter stop matching the transmission. Typical complaints are a gear indicator that shows one position while the car is in another, hard shifting or a lever that sticks in gear, a car that will not start because the transmission does not see Park or Neutral, and a key that will not come out because the car does not register Park. Look at the transmission end of the cable first: a worn end bushing or a cable that has come out of its bracket clip gives the same symptoms.

To install, set the parking brake, chock the wheels and put the shifter in Park. Remove the center console to reach the shifter end, release the cable from the shift lever and its bracket, then disconnect it at the transmission range lever and bracket. Route the new cable along the original path clear of the exhaust, lock it into both brackets, connect both ends with the shifter and transmission in Park, and check that every position lines up with the indicator and the engine only starts in Park and Neutral.
