About this product

This is the electric shift motor that sits on the back of the transfer case on electronic shift-on-the-fly Ford trucks, part number 600-805. It is a brand new unit, not a remanufactured core, and it uses the factory-style connector with a weathertight seal so the plug does not corrode open again the way the original often does. Listed fitment is Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty 1999-2016 and Ford Excursion 2000-2005 - check your trim in Ford's application data before ordering, because manual shift transfer cases on the same trucks do not use a motor at all.

The complaint that sends you here is a truck stuck in two-wheel drive: you press 4Hi and the dash light flashes and never goes solid, or it grinds and drops back to 2Hi. Before condemning the motor, check the two relays at the driver's side firewall and the 4WD fuses, then unplug the motor and check for battery voltage at the connector when you request a shift. If the truck is commanding the shift and the motor is not turning, the motor is the failed part. The other common find is water intrusion at the connector, which corrodes the encoder contacts inside the motor and gives erratic mode readings.

On the bench the swap is three 10 mm bolts and one connector, but the alignment step is what people get wrong. The new motor arrives indexed to the 4Hi position out of the box. Do not rotate the motor to meet the transfer case - pull the old motor, put a wrench on the transfer case shift shaft and turn the shaft to 4Hi so it lines up with the new motor, then set the motor on, blue thread locker on the three bolts, and torque to about 15 lb-ft. Dielectric grease in the connector is worth the thirty seconds. Cycle the range switch through 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo with the engine running and the transmission in neutral to confirm the encoder is reporting the right position.
