Transmission Snap Ring Pliers Set, 10pc Straight and Bent

A transmission teardown throws every kind of retaining ring at you: the big internal rings holding clutch pack backing plates in the drums, the rings on the output shaft and park gear, the small external clips on accumulator and servo pins. One pair of pliers does not cover that range. This set gives you eight pliers, four straight and four bent, in four tip sizes from 0.04 in. up to 0.09 in.

Each plier converts between internal and external with a knob on the pivot, so you are not hunting for a second tool when you go from compressing a drum ring to spreading a shaft clip. The two 13.1 in. pliers (one straight, one bent) are the ones you reach for on deep rings, such as the backing plate rings down inside a direct or forward drum, or the output shaft ring behind a case you cannot get your hand into. The 5.6 to 7.8 in. pliers handle valve body and servo work.

Bent jaws matter when the ring sits below a lip or the ring's ears face sideways. Use the straight pair when you can come straight down on the ears, and switch to the bent pair when the drum wall or shaft is in the way. Seat the tips fully in the ring holes before you squeeze; a tip that is too small for the hole is how rings slip and fly across the bench.
