About this product

This is the electric shift actuator motor that bolts to the back of the ATC-series transfer case and drives the clutch pack that splits torque front to rear. TRQ part number DTA15600, a direct replacement for BMW 27107566296, 27107541782, 27103455136, 27103455139, 27107568267 and 27107599890, and for Dorman 600-932, 600-939 and 600-940. It ships pre-assembled with the motor, gear train and position sensor in one housing, so it drops onto the case with the original three bolts and the factory connector.

The stock unit fails two ways. The white nylon drive gear inside strips its teeth, so the motor spins but the clutch pack never moves; or the position sensor board corrodes and the transfer case control module loses its reference. Either one lights the 4x4 or drivetrain malfunction warning, and the case gets stuck in whatever split it was last commanded to. Symptoms owners describe are binding in tight turns, a grinding whir from under the center of the floor, or the truck defaulting to rear drive with the warning lamp on.

Fitment covers BMW X5 2004-2013, X3 2004-2010 and X6 2008-2014, plus Land Rover LR3 2005-2009, LR4 2010-2016, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport 2006-2017 and Discovery 2017-2018, and Mercedes-Benz ML320, ML350, ML500, ML550, ML63 AMG, GL320, GL450 and GL550 in the 2006-2010 range. Cross-reference numbers on the housing include 130008507, 1645400188 and IGH500040.

On the bench, drop the exhaust heat shield and the crossmember for clearance, unplug the connector, pull the three bolts and the old motor comes straight off the case. Rotate the new motor's output to line up with the shift shaft flat before you seat it, then torque the bolts evenly. On BMW applications the module usually needs a transfer case calibration with a scan tool that can talk to the VTG/ATC controller before the warning clears.
