U240E Transmission Shift Solenoid Kit Toyota Camry

The U240E is the four-speed automatic Toyota put behind the four-cylinder in the Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Highlander and Estima, and its companion U140E sits behind the V6 in the Sienna, Solara and Lexus ES and RX. Both units run their shifts, torque converter lockup and line pressure off small electro-hydraulic solenoids bolted to the valve body. When one of those windings opens up or the pintle sticks with varnish, the transmission stops behaving: a bang into second, a flare between gears, converter shudder at light throttle, or a straight drop into limp with third gear only.

This is a five-piece set covering the solenoids on the valve body, referenced to Toyota part numbers 35240-32010 and 35290-21010. Replacing them as a set is the right call rather than chasing one at a time, because they all live in the same fluid and age at the same rate. If you already have the pan down for a filter, you are most of the way there.

On the bench or on a lift: drop the pan and drain the fluid, pull the filter, then unclip the solenoid connectors at the internal harness and take out the retaining bolts. Note which solenoid came out of which bore before anything moves - the shift solenoids and the lockup solenoid are not interchangeable and swapping two of them will set a fresh code. Fit the new O-rings dry of dirt, torque the retainers lightly, reconnect the harness, then reinstall the filter and pan with a new gasket. Clear codes, refill through the check port, and road test through all four gears plus a steady 45 mph cruise to confirm lockup applies.

Typical codes that lead here are P0751 and P0756 (shift solenoid A and B performance), P0748 (pressure control solenoid electrical), P0770 and P2716. A code that clears and returns after a few heat cycles is the classic sign of a solenoid that is failing when hot rather than a wiring fault.
