ZF Lifeguardfluid 8 ATF, 7-Liter Service Fill for 8HP70

This is the seven-liter service pack of ZF Lifeguardfluid 8, ZF part number S671.090.312, also sold under BMW part number 83 22 2 220 443. It ships as seven sealed one-liter bottles - the quantity an 8HP70 pan-and-filter service actually consumes, instead of buying single liters and coming up short partway through the fill.

Lifeguardfluid 8 is the factory fill for the whole ZF 8HP family: 8HP45, 8HP50, 8HP70, 8HP75 and 8HP90. That covers BMW F10, F30, F15 and F25 chassis, and the Chrysler-group versions of the same gearbox - 845RE and 8HP70 units in Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger and Challenger. It carries the TE-ML 11 approval printed on the bottle. Do not substitute a generic multi-vehicle ATF here; the 8HP clutch packs and the mechatronic valve body are calibrated around this fluid's friction and viscosity, and the wrong fluid shows up as shudder in the lockup clutch and flare on the 2-3 shift.

On the bench the fill is temperature-dependent, not volume-dependent. The 8HP uses a standpipe overflow in the pan: you fill through the side fill plug with the transmission running, bring the fluid up to the specified temperature window on a scan tool, then pull the fill plug and let it level off out the standpipe. Start the job with the vehicle cold - if you overshoot the temperature window you have to let it cool all the way back down and start the level check over. A drain-and-fill typically takes 5 to 6 liters; a pan drop with a new pan-integrated filter takes closer to the full seven, which is why the seven-bottle pack is the right quantity to have on the cart.

Pairs with a ZF 8HP70 pan and filter kit. The pan on these is a one-piece plastic assembly with the filter bonded in, so the filter is replaced with the pan, and the pan bolts torque to 8 Nm - overtightening them is the usual cause of a leak after a first-time service.
