ZF S5-47 Transmission Shifter Stick Kit Ford Super Duty

This is the replacement shift lever assembly for the ZF five-speed manual behind Ford Super Duty and 3/4- and 1-ton pickups. It supersedes Ford part number 4C3Z-7210-AA and is sold elsewhere as the ZF5-28-KIT. Fitment covers the ZF S5-42 from 1987 through 1994 and the ZF S5-47 from 1995 through 1997 in F-250, F-350 and F-450 chassis.

The failure it fixes is the one every high-mileage ZF owner knows: the stick develops side-to-side slop, the gate feel washes out, and finding reverse or fifth turns into a hunt. That wear happens at the lever's pivot and the mating surface inside the shift tower, not in the transmission itself, so pulling the trans is the wrong repair. Swapping the lever restores the mechanical reference the gate needs.

Installation is a bench-simple job on the truck. Pull the console and boot, unbolt the shift tower cap, lift the old lever out of the tower socket, drop the new one in on the same pivot, and reassemble. Basic hand tools only; no fluid loss and no driveline work. If the new lever still feels loose in the socket once assembled, wrap the mating area with a layer of tape to shim the fit before torquing the cap down.

Construction is an iron core for load-bearing rigidity with an aluminum outer sleeve. The iron is what keeps the lever from flexing when you push a cold gearbox into gear; the aluminum keeps the exposed portion from rusting in a truck that lives outside.
