42RLE Transmission Valve Body with Solenoid Block

This is a replacement hydraulic valve body with the solenoid block attached for the Chrysler 42RLE, the four-speed rear-wheel-drive electronic automatic Chrysler built off the 41TE/A604 architecture. It carries OE reference numbers 5078327AA and RL078327AA, the casting used behind the 3.5L, 3.7L, and 4.0L V6 in Jeep Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee, Dodge Dakota, Nitro, Durango, Charger and Challenger, Chrysler 300, and the Mitsubishi Raider. Match the number stamped on your old body before ordering - Chrysler changed the 42RLE valve body and solenoid pack partway through the run and the bodies are not interchangeable across every year.

Nearly every 42RLE driveability complaint traces back to this assembly. The solenoid block and the pressure switches that live on top of it are the first thing to fail, and the truck shows it as a harsh 1-2 hit, a delayed or missing 2-3, slipping under throttle, a hard downshift into first, or limp mode with solenoid circuit codes in the P0750 through P0775 range. Worn valve bores in the body itself bleed off line pressure that the solenoids are trying to control, so replacing solenoids alone on a high-mile unit often puts the same code right back a week later.

It goes in with the transmission in the vehicle. Drain and drop the pan, pull the filter, unplug the solenoid connector at the case, then remove the valve body bolts and lower the assembly out. Keep track of the manual valve linkage and the park rod as it comes down, transfer anything the new body did not come with, and torque the bolts down evenly in a crossing pattern rather than one side at a time so the separator plate seats flat. Fit a new filter and pan gasket while you are in there, refill with ATF+4, and clear the stored codes before you relearn shifts on the road.

Installation is a professional-level job. The 42RLE is pressure-sensitive and a body that is not torqued flat will cross-leak between circuits and give you a fresh set of shift complaints, so if you are not set up to do it on a lift with the fluid handled properly, have a shop install it.
