4EAT Valve Body with Solenoids for Subaru Forester

This is the hydraulic control valve body for the Subaru 4EAT four-speed automatic, Phase II Version II, as used behind the 2.5L in 2005-up Forester and Outback. It ships as a complete assembly with the shift and pressure control solenoids already mounted, so you are replacing the whole hydraulic brain of the transmission in one piece instead of chasing individual solenoids one at a time. The unit is remanufactured: castings are cleaned, bores and separator plate are checked, and the assembly is tested before it leaves the shelf.

The usual reason a 4EAT valve body comes off is worn bores and a sticking or electrically failed solenoid. Symptoms line up in a familiar pattern: a hard or delayed 1-2 shift, flare between gears, no lockup on the highway, or the transmission dropping into limp with solenoid-circuit codes such as P0748 and P0778 stored. A pressure test that reads low or erratic at the line tap, with clean fluid and a healthy pump, points at the valve body rather than the clutch packs.

On the bench the job is straightforward. Drain the pan, pull the pan and filter, unplug the internal harness connectors at the solenoids, back out the valve body bolts working from the center outward, and lower the assembly straight down so the manual valve pin stays clear of the detent lever. Install in reverse, keeping the manual valve slot seated on the detent pin, torque the bolts evenly in a spiral pattern, and use a new filter and pan gasket. Refill with Subaru ATF-HP or the fluid specified on the dipstick and relearn the shift adaptives before road testing.
