Assembled control valve body for the Subaru TR690 Lineartronic CVT, the larger chain-drive continuously variable unit used behind the 2.5L four cylinder in Legacy and Outback from 2010 through 2013. Subaru revised this body more than once inside that model range, so pull your old unit and compare connector position and solenoid count against the photos before you order.

This is the repair when the TR690 has worn valve bores or a solenoid that no longer holds pressure, rather than a stretched chain and worn pulleys. Typical complaints are a shudder under light throttle around 20 to 40 mph, a long delay engaging drive or reverse on a cold morning, engine speed flaring while the ratio lags behind, and stored pressure or ratio codes with the CVT temperature light on. When the aluminum bores are worn, replacing one solenoid buys you a few weeks at best; the whole body has to come out.

On the bench the job runs the same as any pan-off valve body swap. Drain the CVT fluid, drop the pan and the internal filter, photograph the solenoid harness routing before you unplug anything, and support the body as you pull the last bolts so it does not drop and bend the separator plate. Transfer nothing from the old unit unless the new one came without it. Bolt the new body up, torque in a criss-cross pattern, fit a new filter and pan gasket, then refill with the correct Subaru high-torque CVT fluid and set the level by the fluid temperature procedure, not by eye. Most cars want a CVT learning reset with a scan tool afterward before the shift feel settles down.
