TR690 CVT Transmission Valve Body for Subaru Outback

This is a complete replacement valve body for the Subaru Lineartronic TR690, the high-torque chain CVT used behind the 2.5L in the 2010-2013 Legacy and Outback and behind the 2.0L in the 2014-2015 Forester. It supersedes Subaru part numbers 31706AA033 and 31706AA034 and ships as a full assembly, so you are swapping one unit rather than chasing individual valves and bores.

The TR690 controls pulley ratio, torque converter lockup and the AWD transfer clutch through this single casting. When the bores wear or a solenoid circuit drops out, the symptoms show up as shudder when lockup tries to apply, a flare or hang between ratios under light throttle, delayed engagement into drive or reverse after a cold start, and transmission fault lights that come back after a fluid service. Once the bore clearance is gone, cleaning the unit does not bring the pressure back, and replacing the valve body is the repair.

On the bench: drain the CVT, drop the pan, and pull the filter. Release the internal harness connector and the solenoid connectors before you unbolt anything, then remove the valve body bolts and lower the assembly straight down so you do not drag the manual valve against the detent. Transfer the detent spring and any brackets across, index the manual valve to the range lever pin as the new body goes up, and run the bolts down evenly from the center outward. Reuse nothing that seals: new pan gasket, new filter, new drain plug washer.

Refill with Subaru High Torque CVTF only. This unit is fluid-specific, and generic multi-vehicle CVT fluid will not hold the clamp pressure the chain needs. Plan on a fluid-level and learning procedure with a scan tool afterward, since the TR690 sets its level by fluid temperature rather than a dipstick reading.
