Master overhaul kit for the Ford 4R70W, 4R75W and 4R75E with gaskets, seals, O-rings, frictions and steels to rebuild a 1997-2003 unit.
This is a master-level overhaul kit for the Ford 4R70W four-speed automatic, and it also covers the 4R75W and 4R75E that followed it. It is sold as a master kit, meaning the soft parts (gaskets, lip seals, O-rings, sealing rings) come with the friction plates and steel plates, so you are not ordering a separate friction module to finish the job.
Listed fitment is 1997-2003 Ford applications with this transmission: Crown Victoria, Econoline vans, Excursion, Explorer, F-150 and Mustang. The 4R70W went into a lot of Panther-platform cars and half-ton trucks, so if your tag says 4R70W, 4R75W or 4R75E you are in the right place. Confirm the year against your unit before you tear down, since late 4R75E cases use electronic range sensing that changes some external parts.
On the bench: tear down, clean and inspect every drum, hub and bushing. Soak the new frictions in clean Mercon V for at least 20 minutes before stacking them. Replace every sealing ring on the pump stator and output shaft, then check clutch pack clearances with a feeler gauge as each pack goes together. The typical reasons a 4R70W ends up on the bench are a burned intermediate or overdrive band and clutch pack, forward clutch piston seal failure that causes a delayed Drive engagement, or worn pump stator rings that bleed off line pressure and slip the 2-3 shift.
This kit does not include bands, bushings, a filter or hard parts. Inspect the drums for heat checking and the planetaries for end play while it is apart.
