The drum in a 62TE sits down in the case on a splined hub with a tight bushing fit, and it does not want to come straight up once the fluid film is gone. Pulling it with screwdrivers or a pry bar under the lip is how drums get bent, how the sealing ring lands get nicked, and how a rebuild picks up a leak that was not there when the unit came in. This tool threads into the drum hub instead, so the pull is on the center of the part and straight up the axis of the shaft.
On the bench: with the case split and the pump out, clear the snap ring and any thrust washer above the drum, thread the tool down into the drum hub by hand until it bottoms and seats, then lift. If the drum is stuck on the bushing, tap the top of the tool lightly while keeping upward tension rather than rocking it side to side, because rocking is what wedges a drum on its shaft. Reverse the same steps on assembly to set the drum down flat and keep the sealing rings from rolling out of their grooves.
