Five billet accumulator pistons, a heavy-duty support plate, bolts and 20 seals to reseal the accumulator bores on Dodge and Ram 45RFE, 545RFE and 68RFE units.
This kit replaces all five accumulator pistons in the Chrysler RFE family: 45RFE, 545RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE and 68RFE. The factory pistons are plastic, and after enough heat cycles they wear, crack or lose their seal in the bore. Once an accumulator leaks, the clutch it cushions fills slow and uneven, which is a common root of harsh or flared shifts, delayed engagement and slipping on the 2-3 and 3-4 on high-mileage Rams, Durangos and Grand Cherokees.
In the box: five machined billet aluminum pistons, a heavy-duty support plate that replaces the thin stock retainer plate, seven mounting bolts, a washer and 20 replacement seals. The thicker plate holds the springs and pistons square in their bores so the plate does not flex under line pressure.
On the bench: drop the pan and filter, pull the valve body, then remove the accumulator plate and lift out the springs and pistons, noting which spring goes in which bore. Clean the bores and inspect them for scoring. Install the new seals on the billet pistons, lube them with ATF or assembly gel, set each piston and its spring back in its original bore, and bolt down the new support plate evenly before the valve body goes back on. Refill with ATF+4 and run a quick learn if your controller supports it.
