GM Original Equipment DEXRON VI in three one-gallon jugs, twelve quarts total, enough to dry-fill a 4L60E or 6L80 with the converter.
ACDelco 10-9244 (GM 88865618) is the factory DEXRON VI fluid, the same specification GM fills its automatics with on the line. This listing is a case of three one-gallon jugs, twelve quarts, which is the size worth buying when a unit is on the bench rather than in the vehicle. Buying gallons instead of quarts also cuts the number of bottles you are fighting with over a funnel.
DEXRON VI replaced DEXRON III across the GM lineup and is backward compatible with it, so one fluid covers both a late 6L80 and an early 700-R4 or TH400 rebuild. It is correct for 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E, 4L80E, 4L85E, 6L45, 6L50, 6L80, 6L90, and the older DEXRON III units. It is not the fluid for GM's 10-speed automatics, which call for DEXRON ULV, and it is not a CVT or dual clutch fluid.
Twelve quarts is close to a full dry fill. A 4L60E with a stock pan and an empty converter takes about eleven to twelve quarts; a 4L80E runs higher, near thirteen to fourteen, so add a jug if that is the unit. Prime the converter with two or three quarts before you bolt it up and spin it onto the pump, fill the rest through the dipstick tube, then start the engine and add as the pump pulls fluid down. Set the final level hot with the selector cycled through all ranges. Overfilling is the more common mistake and it aerates the fluid, which shows up as delayed or soft shifts that look like a pressure problem.
