4L60E 700R4 200-4R TCC Lock-Up Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid

The TCC lock-up solenoid is the electric valve that applies the torque converter clutch. When the transmission commands lockup, this normally-closed solenoid opens and routes apply oil to the converter clutch, mechanically coupling the engine to the input shaft. That kills the last bit of converter slip in the higher gears, which is what drops your engine RPM at cruise, keeps ATF temperature down, and gives you the highway fuel economy these overdrive transmissions were designed for.

When the solenoid quits - burned coil, stuck valve, or a broken internal winding - the converter never locks. You feel it as higher-than-normal RPM on the freeway, a converter shudder or surge as it tries and fails to apply, rising transmission temperature, and worse gas mileage. On electronic 4L60E and 4L65E units a failed lock-up solenoid will commonly set a TCC circuit code and can force the PCM to disable lockup entirely. On the earlier non-electronic 700R4 and 200-4R, it is the heart of the factory lockup circuit and the usual cause of a converter that simply will not lock.
