4L60E Master Rebuild Kit with Band and Filter, 2004-Up

This is a master rebuild kit for the later GM 4L60E and 4L65E, the 2004-up case. Laid out on the bench it covers the friction plates and steel plates for the clutch packs, a new 2-4 band, bonded input and forward pistons, a new filter, the valve body separator plate gaskets, the case and pan gaskets, the front and rear lip seals and the full sealing ring and O-ring set. That means a unit torn all the way down can go back together without hunting down loose soft parts or reusing a glazed band. Kit weight is about 13 lb.

Listed applications include the 2004-2010 Silverado 1500 with the 4.3L, 5.3L and 6.0L, 2004-2007 Express 2500, 2004-2008 Avalanche, 2004-2010 Colorado and Canyon, 2004-2006 Escalade, 2004-2005 Astro and the 2004 Corvette, plus the Tahoe and Yukon of the same years. GM changed the 4L60E in 2004, so on a truck built in 2003 or earlier use the early-case kit instead, and on any unit confirm the pistons and gaskets against what comes out of your case before you commit to the teardown.

The usual reasons to go this deep: a burned 3-4 clutch pack that shows up as a flare into 3rd or no 4th gear, a worn 2-4 band that slips on the 1-2 shift or in 2nd, and hardened piston seals that bleed off apply pressure. On the bench, soak every friction in clean ATF for at least 30 minutes, check each pack clearance as you stack it, lube the lip seals before you seat the pistons, and install the new band and filter. Inspect the sun shell, the 3-4 apply ring, the input housing and the pump before reassembly, since those hard parts are not in a soft-parts kit and a cracked sun shell will undo the rebuild.
