ATSG 68RFE Transmission Rebuild and Repair Manual

This is the ATSG TechTran technical manual for the Chrysler 68RFE, the six-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic that sits behind the 6.7L Cummins in Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. The 68RFE grew out of the 45RFE/545RFE family and is fully electronically controlled, using three six-pinion planetary gear sets and driver-adaptive shift logic. The same book covers the closely related 65RFE and 66RFE units, so one manual handles the whole late RFE line.

Inside you get the principles of operation for each range, the clutch and band application chart, component identification with exploded views, the disassembly and reassembly sequence, and the electrical side of the unit including solenoid identification and connector pinouts. That is the material you actually need at the bench when a unit is apart on the fixture and you are trying to confirm which drum you are looking at or which solenoid feeds which circuit.

The practical use is diagnosis before teardown and verification during buildup. If the truck is dropping to limp, burning the overdrive clutch, or setting a solenoid performance code, the operation charts tell you which apply circuit is involved before you pull the pan. On reassembly the clearance and torque data keeps you from guessing at clutch pack stack-up. ATSG updates these TechTran books as engineering changes roll through the gear train, and the 68RFE has seen several of those for durability.
